Internet giant Amazon has set up a team that will investigate what role autonomous driving can play in transporting parcels. For now, the etailer does not seem intent on developing self-driving technology in-house.
So writes The Wall Street Journal. The team was already assembled last year. Being a team of 12 people, it appears to be an internal think tank. Parties developing self-driving technology often employ hundreds, if not thousands, of people. So with a 12-person team, Amazon can make little difference.
One possibility is that Amazon is acquiring a company that is already further along in developing self-driving vehicles. Such a move seems in line with Amazon's need to keep parcel transport in its own hands. Last year, for instance, it decided to lease aircraft in order to be less dependent on international carriers.
