Almost 140,000 people are currently employed in the sector; the highest number since early 2009. Staff shortages are lurking in some occupations, reports the Transport and Logistics Sector Institute.

Turnover growth, both for professional road haulage and logistics service providers, is increasing the number of jobs in the sector. In the first quarter of 2017, 8410 new workers entered the industry, a very high number compared to previous years. In the same period in 2016, the inflow was 6337. FNV Transport and Logistics speaks of a positive development: "There seems to be a structural development; it is not just about temporary workers. Certainly among drivers, these are real jobs. We desperately need that with a view to the future as a sector," said director Egon Groen.

However, shortages are occurring in certain occupations. Willem de Vries, director of the Transport and Logistics Sector Institute: "The labour market dynamics are increasing. There is a lot of inflow, but more new workers are needed. The professions of driver and planner are named by the UWV as 'tight professions'. These developments are increasing concerns among entrepreneurs about a staff shortage."
