McDonald's is expanding its delivery area to Rotterdam and Utrecht after a successful trial in Amsterdam, followed by The Hague and Eindhoven.

The chain reports this in a press release, with Rotterdam and Utrecht starting on 19 September. Precise dates for The Hague and Eindhoven are not yet available. After this year, McDonald's will investigate the possibilities for other cities, such as Groningen or Nijmegen.

With the delivery service, McDonald's says it is tapping into a new target group. For instance, 88 per cent of the orders would be placed by people who do not normally visit McDonald's easily. 45 per cent order a second time. How much extra turnover the delivery service will bring McDonald's, director Manu Steijaert would not say, reports ANP.

The fast food chain has been delivering in Amsterdam via meal delivery service UberEATS since May this year. The US giant was previously cautious about home delivery, partly due to the challenge of keeping the food warm during the trip. With the popularity of meal delivery companies like Deliveroo, Foodora and UberEATS, it decided to change strategy. Late last year, it launched home delivery in the US, followed by Britain and the Netherlands. As around three-quarters of Dutch consumers live within a five-kilometre radius of a Mcdonald's branch, fast food delivery is quite feasible, especially in big cities.
