Deliveroo's meal delivery workers are speaking out against the company's plans to employ only self-employed workers. The group has organised itself under the name 'Riders Union'. "All the company's risks are now being shifted onto us," the protest reads.

According to trade union FNV, it involves a large group of delivery workers. Tonight, the Riders Union will go public for the first time during a discussion evening on platform economy in Pakhuis De Zwijger. "All the risks of the business are now being shifted onto us. We do not have the ambition to be on bikes as so-called independent entrepreneurs, which is why we are now standing up for ourselves. We just want to work and earn money," said Daan Dorr, delivery driver at Deliveroo.

Deliveroo argues that both the company and the delivery workers would benefit from a zzp construction. That claim is supported by a survey on flexibility. Unjustified, says FNV. "The fact that deliverymen want to combine their work with their studies says nothing. The delivery workers feel abused and are organising themselves," responds Frederique Zebeda, director FNV Jong. Deliveroo would only be concerned with cost savings. "Our calculations show that a delivery driver with the self-employed wage is much worse off than in permanent employment and certainly compared to the collective wage, while Deliveroo keeps the purse strings tight and saves thousands of euros per rider per year."

In a letter to Deliveroo, FNV wants to report that the work of the meal delivery workers falls under the collective labour agreement TLN, for professional freight transport. "The work has all the characteristics that fit this collective agreement. The delivery workers are worse off without a collective agreement, get worse pay and have no security. Moreover, the risks of illness or a broken bike or accident are now theirs. The TLN collective agreement does offer them that security and provides pension, continued payment in case of illness, insurance in case of accidents and so on."
