Boni was one of the first supermarkets in the Netherlands with an online shop, but will soon pull the plug on its e-commerce channel. Boni will then only have an online presence as a purchasing partner of online supermarket Picnic.
So writes Twinklemagazine.nl. "Developments in the online market have made Boni decide to discontinue the operations of Boni Webwinkel and to focus on the Boni supermarkets with a new online strategy," Boni said. Boni launched an online shop in 2011. This made it - apart from Albert Heijn - one of the first supermarkets to start selling online on a large scale. What Boni's new strategy entails remains to be seen. The supermarket says that its new online strategy focuses on the 'ideal online customer journey'.
Boni does still function online as Picnic's purchasing and warehouse partner. Since the opening of the online supermarket, Picnic rents warehouse space from Boni in Nijkerk. The Van der Wal family of Boni Supermarkets already invested millions of euros in Picnic through family fund Finci. The fund holds a minority stake in the online supermarket.
