Those who drive a lot in the UK as lorry drivers can expect hefty fines when breaching rest and driving laws.
Truck drivers need to pay close attention to the rules in the UK. If they do not cross the border properly rested or do not pay enough attention to the safety of themselves and other road users, the UK regulator DVSA can fine them handsomely.
DVSA has instructed its enforcers to issue higher fines if lorry drivers fail to comply with driving and rest periods. Those fines can reach up to €350. Earlier, drivers were only fined if the offence took place on the day of the enforcer's observation, or if driving time violations were made.

The DVSA have now been given the power to look at each driver's tachtograph history. If violations are flagged on it, the driver can be fined. Over 28 days, up to five fines can be issued and foreign drivers must pay immediately. Those who cannot pay must abandon their trucks until the amount of money can be paid.
Offences committed outside the UK can also be fined. As a final measure, resting in the cab, known as cab camping, is no longer allowed. Those who do so can also face a €350 fine.
