The Netherlands is one of the world's most developed countries in e-commerce. Our country scores a lot higher than Germany and England, according to the B2C E-commerce Index of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD).

The Netherlands holds fourth position in this year's ranking. Luxembourg, Switzerland and Norway occupy the top three. Germany and England are tenth and sixth respectively.

The study includes 143 countries. For each e-commerce market, the researchers look at internet usage, use of secure servers, penetration of payment accounts and reliability of parcel delivery. The Netherlands comes out well from the study, among other things, due to the density of payment accounts. Everyone aged 15 or older has a bank account. 79 per cent of the population made an online purchase last year.

Notable is the absence of the United States in the top 10. The US occupies 26th place in the rankings, doing just slightly better than Cyprus and Malta. There are seven European countries in the top 10. The three other countries are South Korea, Japan and New Zealand.
