Container throughput at the port of Rotterdam continues to grow. In the first nine months of 2017, the number of containers increased by 10.1 per cent to 10.2 million units (TEUs) compared to the same period in 2016.
Total transhipment increased by 2 per cent in the same period. Besides containers, agribulk and breakbulk mainly contributed to this growth. Wet bulk such as mineral oil products saw a decrease. A total of 351.5 million tonnes were transhipped up to and including September.
Allard Castelein, CEO Port of Rotterdam Authority: "Partly thanks to the 10 per cent growth in container throughput, it was a nice quarter for our port figures. This was offset by less throughput in several other sectors. Coal throughput, for example, declined compared to last year due to the closure of two coal-fired power plants in Rotterdam and an increase in sustainable energy production. Fuel oil throughput also lagged behind last year."
Throughout 2017, transhipment is still expected to grow 1 to 2 per cent compared to 2016. Castelein: "Given the new cabinet's recent coalition agreement, long-term challenges, such as energy transition, seem to be getting more attention and could have far-reaching consequences in submarkets. We welcome this ambition from the new cabinet, which we hope will lead to appropriate regulations and financing options to support companies in the transition."
