The transport sector is the most polluting sector in the United States. That title went to the energy sector for 40 years, but currently the transport sector is the biggest contributor of CO2 emissions.

The US energy authority EIA has published data showing that the energy sector has embarked on a sustainability shift, which has drastically reduced the sector's emissions. So the shifting transport sector has not started emitting more CO2, the ANP writes.

Transport sector not the biggest polluter in the Netherlands

In the Netherlands, the energy sector is still the biggest polluter, although there has also been a decline in CO2 emissions here. Figures from Statistics Netherlands show that almost a third of pollution is caused by waste processors and energy and water companies.

The transport sector is responsible for 18 per cent of CO2 emissions. Road freight transport saw the largest increase. This can be explained by an increase in traffic movements.
