Nestlé and XPO Logistics are building a state-of-the-art logistics hub in the UK. The centre will act not only as a distribution centre, but also as a platform for testing and launching new technologies."We are realising the logistics hub of the future here, where we can try everything out."
The state-of-the-art distribution centre in Leicestershire covers an area of 60,000 square metres and requires an investment of £55 million (€63 million). Nestlé will use the site to distribute brands such as Kit Kat and Nescafé to retailers and wholesalers.

At the hub, XPO Logistics will work with solution provider Swisslog to test various digital technologies, from picking robots and drones that inventory stock to advanced data analytics and augmented reality. According to Richard Cawstond, managing director supply chain at XPO Logistics Europe, successful technologies will eventually be implemented at other XPO Logistics locations.
Automation in retail logistics
Such far-reaching automation has so far mainly been used in e-fulfilment centres. XPO is now taking a first step to automate retail logistics. Possibly it wants to use this to address the growing shortage of staff.
