DHL Express is expanding its intercontinental network with the purchase of fourteen Boeing 777 Freighters. With this, DHL expects to meet the increasing demand for express delivery worldwide.
The carrier placed the order for fourteen aircraft at the Farnborough International Airshow in the UK. The order also includes options and purchase rights for a further seven aircraft. DHL Express expects to put the first four aircraft into service in 2019.
Growth cross-border parcel transport
The market for cross-border e-commerce is expected to grow to $4.48 trillion by 2021, a growth of 19.2 per cent a year, and DHL's investment in the 777 Freighters is a direct response to this growing demand.
Less CO2 emissions
The 14 aircraft are to replace current capacity, but offer 'significant benefits in cost, efficiency and reliability', according to DHL. The planes are expected to reduce CO2 emissions by 18 per cent. Previously, DHL Express mainly leased aircraft. With the purchase of the cargo planes, the carrier hopes to improve its cost position in the future.
