Thuiswinkel.org is putting a sharper focus on making packaging more sustainable in the e-commerce sector. The interest group is working on new sustainability plans in which it further sharpens its ambitions in the field of sustainable packaging.

Back in 2015, the online shopping industry formulated targets for making packaging more sustainable. This has had an effect, according to a tour of Thuiswinkel.org members: by far the majority of cardboard boxes are made of certified or recycled cardboard. In addition, more and more companies are working with recycled plastic and thinner plastic. Moreover, a growing number of online retailers are using packaging machines that package to size.

Room for improvement

Thuiswinkel.org also sees room for improvement. It is therefore developing new targets for the coming years. Among other things, the industry association is aiming for an increase in recycled plastic and better consumer information about separating packaging materials. It also wants to investigate the possibilities of re-using packaging, omitting packaging and better packaging density.

New industry sustainability plans

The new targets will be included in new industry sustainability plans for 2018-2022. The Sustainable Packaging Knowledge Institute (KIDV) has been designated as the party to review the sustainability plans.
