Self-steering boats that pick up trash in Amsterdam's canal belt. That is what the Amsterdam Institute for Advanced Metropolitan Solutions is working on. The so-called Roboats should be launched in 2020.

The AMS Institute is working with the Massachussets Institute of Technology on the self-steering waste boats. With the boats, the AMS Institute aims to combat traffic congestion, noise pollution and air pollution that rubbish trucks typically cause.

Containers on the water

The idea: residents and businesses can place their waste in a floating container. The self-steering boat receives a signal and picks up the container. Thanks to lasers and cameras, the boats avoid obstacles.

Also for other watery cities

Watery cities such as Singapore, Venice and London are now also said to be interested. In 2020, the developers expect to put the Roboats to work. A pilot is planned then.
