Bol.com is going toeliminate padding material from the majority of parcels. Thanks to precise packaging machines and a new filling advice, 75 per cent of parcels will be sent without padding this year.

The online platform is working with packaging machines that pack orders even more accurately to size. In addition, bol.com developed a new filling advice for manual packing. On a tablet, an employee is shown whether or not to use filling material with an item.

0 grams of CO2 emissions

"Omitting stuffing material helps us get closer to our target of reducing CO2 emissions per parcel to 0 grams by 2025," says Jori Ebskamp, Lead CSR and Sustainability. "It benefits our 10 million customers, ourselves, and the environment when we manage to keep packaging material to a minimum."

Omission of outer box

A few months ago, bol.com already announced that it would omit the recognisable outer box from 3.5 million items. Only when an item is fragile or vulnerable will a cardboard box and padding material be used. The e-tailer says it saved a stack the height of 23 Eiffel Towers of cardboard in 2018 by making cardboard thinner.
