De Bijenkorf officially opened its new distribution centre on Thursday. From the new premises in Tilburg, Ingram Micro handles the supply of all shops and online orders.

The logistics site covers an area of 82,000 square metres. The XXL DC replaces two other locations of De Bijenkorf. Previously, the retailer handled shop supplies from Woerden, while online orders were prepared by Ingram Micro in Waalwijk.

Centralisation of logistics

With centralisation of logistics, De Bijenkof aims for more efficiency. "Keeping one central stock in a new distribution centre means that goods get to where they are needed faster, whether for the webshop or one of the shops," De Bijenkof said about this earlier.

Energy-neutral building

The building, built and leased by HVBM Vastgoed, has sustainability certification BREEAM Outstanding. 17,000 square metres of solar panels are on the roof of the distribution centre, providing power to the building and over 600 households. No gas is used in the energy-neutral building. A heat pump cools and heats the building.

14 million products

Ingram Micro expects to ship 14 million items annually from Tilburg by 2020. Initially, the DC will accommodate 300 employees. In time, this will grow to six hundred employees.
