Amazon has expanded its portfolio in autonomous robots with the acquisition of startup Canvas Technology. The company is best known for its autonomous-driving picking carts.

US-based Canvas was founded in 2015 and has since developed several logistics solutions, the most notable being the Canvas Autonomous Cart. This self-driving pick cart can independently avoid people and obstacles in a warehouse environment based on 3D imaging.

Canvas is a fitting addition to the offering of Amazon Robotics, a division created from the acquisition of Kiva systems. The familiar orange goods-to-man carts are now running in many of Amazon's distribution centres.
