Picking up a parcel at a petrol station should provide consumers with convenience. For that reason, Amazon and Shell have joined forces. The two companies will start a trial with takeaway lockers at German petrol stations. German newspaper Handelsblatt reports.
The first ten lockers have now been installed and are located at a petrol station in the German city of Munich. If the pilot is a success, Amazon and Shell want to roll out the service further. In doing so, the option to extend beyond petrol stations will be kept open.
Experience
The somewhat remarkable collaboration has come about because both companies want to gain more experience with click & collect at petrol stations. The test should show whether consumers are actually helped by collecting online orders from special lockers or whether it is barely used in practice. If the test is successful, lockers will be installed at all Shell petrol stations, two thousand in total.
DHL
In the German market, DHL is the market leader, but Amazon hopes to snatch more market share. DHL already has many lockers where parcels can be collected. More than eight million Germans have an access card to one of DHL's 2,750 lockers.
