Amazon wants to deliver faster by deploying mini-fulfilment centres. In at least four US cities, it is opening small distribution centres specifically for same-day delivery.
In Dallas, Philadelphia, Phoenix and Orlando, Amazon is launching same-day delivery, available only to members of subscription service Prime. Customers can place an order until one in the afternoon to receive it at five. Orders up to five in the afternoon will be delivered in the evening. Interestingly, orders between five pm and midnight, are delivered from 4.30 am the next morning.
The mini-fulfilment centres are specially set up for same day delivery. Up to three million different items are stored here. According to Amazon, the centres even reduce CO2 emissions. "Although same-day delivery of course suggests otherwise, higher delivery speeds - which these facilities make possible - help us achieve climate-neutral delivery by 2040. This is because the fulfilment centres are close to customers, reducing the distances that drivers travel."
