Amazon remains committed to food sales. The US company recently bought supermarket chain Whole Foods and now seems to be offering its own meal boxes.
So writes GeekWire. For now, it seems to be a test phase, with the 'Amazon Meals Kits' reportedly already on the market for a limited number of customers since the end of June. The condition is that they are customers of Amazon Fresh, Amazon's grocery shopping service.
For the meal boxes - unlike the similar Dutch HelloFresh - consumers do not have to take out a subscription. The packages are sold individually, at prices between $15.99 and $19.99. For that, consumers receive a box with ingredients for one two-person meal. The US internet giant currently offers 17 different meals.
Whole Foods takeover
Amazon seems to want to get big in the food market. It recently bought US supermarket chain Whole Foods, adding 460 stores in one fell swoop. It is still unclear what strategy is behind this unexpected purchase. Possibly, Amazon wants to start delivering from Whole Foods stores for online grocery service Amazon Fresh.
Amazon Fresh
With Amazon Fresh, meanwhile, the retail giant is growing in Europe. Amazon was already operating with its shopping service in Britain, Italy and France. In May, Amazon Fresh was launched in Berlin. The service is currently being rolled out across the rest of Germany.
