A striking move by bpost: the Belgian postal and parcel company reported this week that it would no longer collect parcels on Saturdays. A day later, it went back on this move, with Belgian media writing with astonishment about the market leader's choice.

'Measure needed to keep bpost profitable'

It was announced this week that bpost would no longer drop by the post office for parcels on Saturdays. The move would mean parcels delivered to the post office on Saturday would not reach their final destination before Tuesday. It would be the first time bpost cut back on its parcels division, which is considered one of the company's few growth markets. According to a company spokesperson, the measure was necessary to keep the business profitable.

"Most of the volume of parcels, even almost 100 per cent, is brought in on weekdays anyway," the spokesperson told the Mediahuis newspapers. "For the big companies, which don't pass by the postal point, nothing will change."

Unexpected twist: parcels collected on Saturday after all

A day later, however, bpost backtracked. For the time being, the company will still continue to collect parcels on Saturdays. "We have reviewed everything again and have come to the conclusion that it is better to keep the collection on Saturdays," a spokesperson told Metro. It is unclear why the measure is being reversed, "Several elements play a role."
