Nearly three quarters of Dutch online shoppers have occasionally abandoned a purchase when shipping costs were charged. Less than 15 per cent of consumers do not mind paying shipping costs.

This is according to research by Trusted Shops among more than a thousand consumers. 23.7 per cent of respondents have never abandoned an online purchase when shipping costs were charged. Of shoppers who did cancel purchases, 62.7 per cent said they would do so again in the future when shipping costs come into the picture, and 10.2 per cent will pay shipping costs in the future, especially when they like a product.

Webshops charge shipping costs more often

Free shipping seemed to have bucked the trend in recent months. Clothing chain H&M shipped orders for free for years, but has been charging shipping costs for orders under 20 euros since this year. The tide has also turned at Zalando. The chain charges a small fee for home delivery in more and more countries, although in the Netherlands it still delivers for free.
