Belgian supermarket chain Delhaize is laying down a nice sum for a new distribution centre in Ninove, a small town in the Belgian province of East Flanders. A total of 143 million euros is being paid for the new distribution centre. Expansion of its logistics operations should enable further shop expansion and innovation.
Completion in 2018
Delhaize started the construction of the new distribution centre back in 2014, with the 2017 DC scheduled to be commissioned in phases. The whole thing should be ready in 2018, Delhaize announced on Thursday.
Less storage space in shops
The focus of the distribution centre will be on high-rotation products; products that are purchased frequently and therefore need to be transported to the shops frequently. As a result, the shops will need less large storage space. With this new distribution centre, Delhaize will manage over 200 000 square metres of storage and distribution space, where two thousand employees will be responsible for stocking the 700 shops in Belgium.
