Dutch consumers ordered €13.1 billion worth of products online last year. The online turnover share in the retail sector is now 9.6 per cent, up 0.5 percentage points on 2017.

This is according to research by GfK, commissioned by Thuiswinkel.org. The figures show that 96 per cent of Dutch people (15+) made a purchase online last year. That is an increase of 2 per cent compared to a year earlier.

"With the growth in the number of Dutch consumers shopping online and the still rising market share of online sales, we can say that e-commerce is playing an increasingly important role within the retail sector," said Wijnand Jongen, director of Thuiswinkel.org on the figures.

The fastest riser in online is the Food/Near Food product category, where 24 per cent more was spent online than a year earlier. Growth in this category is levelling off, though. In 2017, growth was still 35 per cent.
