Can Belgian logistics not handle the growth of e-commerce?

Belgian online sales are on such a rise that logistics are out of control. So argues the Belgian Trade Federation Comeos. Many complaints are said to be coming in about the delivery of parcels.

Comeos asked 1,500 Belgians about their online buying behaviour. Many respondents said that logistics were not in order. "More Belgians say they have sometimes received a wrong or damaged product. The current boom in online purchases therefore poses new logistical challenges to companies," the trade federation said.

As recently as February, Comeos claimed that online retailers are moving their logistics operations en masse to the Netherlands, because regulations there are less strict and labour costs are lower. In Belgium, for instance, there is a ban on night work, which means customers have to wait longer for their orders. Rules like these may contribute to growing dissatisfaction among Belgian online shoppers.
