Amazon is recruiting people and buying land in the Netherlands. This is stated by Wijnand Jongen of thuiswinkel.org to the NRC. He would hear in the market "that Amazon is recruiting people and buying land to build distribution centres".

Jongen makes the statements after it was announced on Wednesday that Amazon competitor Alibaba will open an office in Amsterdam. Stories about Amazon possibly coming to the Netherlands have been circulating for years. An amazon.nl already exists since November 2014, but for now only digital books are available there. Nevertheless, according to Jongen, the stories are taking on increasingly serious forms.

The arrival of Amazon and Alibaba in the Netherlands would have a major impact on the entire retail sector, Jongen suspects. "Big players likeBol.com, Wehkamp and Coolblue will feel it," he says. Physical retail will also suffer. "Consumers can only spend their money once," he says.
