Lidl will start selling fresh food online after all. The supermarket discounter only sold non-food products on its webshop, but is now starting daily grocery delivery in Ghent, Belgium.

Lidl Simpl

To this end, it has launched the webshop 'Lidl Simpl'. Customers living in Ghent can choose from four hundred of Lidl's food products. They will get their online ordered groceries delivered to their home within two hours by bicycle. At checkout, customers choose a time slot of their choice, from Monday to Saturday between 10am and 10pm. For orders under 25 euros, Lidl charges 2.99 euros in shipping costs. Above that amount, delivery is free.

Winning time

"With this initiative, we want to help families and students in Ghent save time. After all, with our busy lifestyles, it's not always easy to get groceries scheduled somewhere in between. That is why we are now offering our fresh products for the people of Ghent online and at the same prices as in shops," spokeswoman Isabelle Colbrandt told Belgian newspaper De Tijd.

Non-food products in Germany and the Netherlands

Until a year ago, Lidl also delivered fresh food products at home in homeland Germany. Today, it focuses on online sales of non-food products in both Germany and the Netherlands.
