Through continuous innovation, the province of Limburg wants to strengthen its leading position in the logistics sector.Maastricht University and Province of Limburg are therefore setting up the Brightlands Institute for Supply Chain Innovation (BISCI), which will focus entirely on developing innovative supply chain solutions.
'Investment is crucial'
The BISCI will be located at Brightlands Campus Greenport Venlo, and the aim of the institute is to drive supply chain innovation. "Logistics is an important economic sector in Limburg with many innovative companies. Investing in Limburg's logistics hotspot position is crucial," said Joost van den Akker, member of the Provincial Executive for Economy and Knowledge Infrastructure.
To enable innovation, cutting-edge research and training of professionals/leaders is a necessity, the parties write in a statement. The three core activities of the institute will therefore consist of driving supply chain innovation, research and education and executive training.
Holistic approach
The BISCI will work from a holistic vision of supply chain management. Within this, it distinguishes four perspectives: logistics, operations, procurement and marketing. In practice, these sub-areas are said to be increasingly integrated and interdependent. "Solving logistics issues through a holistic and integrated supply chain approach increases the likelihood of innovative solutions," UM and the province said.
The BISCI is expected to be operational from next summer.
