The logistics courses at Rotterdam's ROC Zadkine have again fallen into disrepute. Earlier this year, exam fraud was discovered at the courses. The Education Inspectorate is now reprimanding the ROC for 'unsound' absence registration.
The Education Inspectorate launched a supplementary investigation into ROC Zadkine after it discovered in spring that teachers cooperated in exam fraud at the course. This additional investigation showed that the courses did not or did not sufficiently record which students were present or absent from classes. This would encourage truancy. The inspection speaks to RTV Rijnmond of a "serious situation". On some days, more than half of the more than 700 youngsters are said to be absent.
According to the inspection, the problem starts at the very beginning of the school day. All students in the registration system are automatically set to 'present'. So the teacher does not have to manually fill in who is in class and who is not. Some teachers would not check who is present at all. In some cases, the list would even be filled in afterwards by a completely different teacher who was not present at the class at all.
Through an app, students could easily report sick. Even when they are still minors and subject to compulsory education. According to teachers, young people frequently abuse this. The SP has since announced that it will ask parliamentary questions about ROC Zadkine.
