'More jobs in logistics despite deployment of robots'

Logistics is becoming increasingly automated, but that doesn't mean it doesn't need staff anymore. The demand for manpower would even increase, especially on the side of e-fulfilment. So says Stan de Caluwé of Netherlands Distribution Land.

In a meeting of logistics directors from the Rivierenland area, De Caluwé already revealed that robots are not necessarily disastrous for jobs in logistics. To LogistiekProfs, he explained: "Many companies in e-commerce deliver directly to consumers. That requires a different approach. This creates jobs."

Hands needed to process returns
Full automation would not yet be an option in e-fulfilment warehouses. "At these warehouses, not only do a lot of parcels go out, a lot of returns come in," says De Caluwé. "At some companies it is as much as 40 per cent. This calls for a new approach and, as a result, labour remains badly needed." According to the Senior Manager Supply Chain Solutions, this should not only include standard order pickers. "Employees are also needed who liaise with customers, IT specialists and even photographers who photograph the products so we can get them on the webshop. There is also a great need for drivers due to the increase in the number of parcels to be delivered."
