Dutch online shoppers are increasingly making their purchases across borders. Last year, 9 per cent of Dutch online shoppers made online purchases only at foreign webshops, compared to 7 per cent in 2016.

This is according to the Ecommerce Report 2019, prepared in cooperation with SAP Customer Experience. 40 per cent of the Dutch bought from both domestic and foreign webshops. In 2016, this percentage was 32 per cent, and the number of people shopping online only in the Netherlands fell from 63 to 51 per cent during that period.

China preferred

When Dutch people shop abroad, they like to do so at Chinese webshops; 45 per cent of foreign purchases come from there. Packages also regularly arrive in the Netherlands from France (26 per cent) and England (21 per cent). Yet not everyone seems keen on online shopping in Asia. A third of Dutch people do not trust the quality of the products. In addition, 32 per cent find it easier to order through a Dutch webshop and a quarter is afraid that the parcel will not arrive.

US less popular

Interestingly, the United States is less popular with online shoppers, with 72 per cent of Dutch people having never bought anything here and only four per cent regularly shopping at US webshops. On average, Europe and Asia are about equally popular. However, the percentage regularly shopping in Asia is seven per cent higher than in Europe.
