Despite economic growth in 2018, an increasing number of logistics companies failed to keep their heads above water. 183 companies in the sector went bankrupt, an increase of 14.4 per cent compared to 2017.

This is according to preliminary figures from CBS. Last year, a total of 3,144 companies and institutions (excluding sole traders) were declared bankrupt in the Netherlands. This is the lowest number of this century. In 2013, the number of bankruptcies still peaked at 8,376, after which the number of bankrupt companies fell for five consecutive years, by a total of over 62 per cent. According to CBS, this was accompanied by the economic growth of the past five years in the Netherlands.

Interestingly, companies in transport and warehousing did not share in the downward trend in 2018. In 2017, 160 companies in the sector went bankrupt. In 2018, that number rose to 183.
