Picnic's red trolleys are now also on French roads. The online supermarket delivers to households in the region around Valenciennes, just across the border with Belgium, for which it opened a hub in Anzin.
Picnic started a private pilot in the northern French town a few weeks ago. The app-only supermarket is driving around there with ten delivery vans. Thirty are expected by the end of this year. From its hub in Anzin, it can supply 60,000 households with groceries. Picnic currently employs around twenty runners in France. By the end of 2021, there should be fifty.
Co-founder Michiel Muller says more than two years of work went into the introduction in France. He calls Valenciennes a typical Picnic city, as it has a relatively large number of families. Picnic plans to expand gradually in France, just as it does in the Netherlands and Germany.
