Picnic has won the 2018 German-Dutch Prize for the Economy. The online supermarket was praised by the jury for its 'pragmatic approach'.

The German-Dutch Prize for the Economy was awarded for the 11th time yesterday. Picnic competed this year with Dutch industrial design firm MMID and Frankfurt-based IT start-up Venios. The finalists had been chosen by an expert jury. An online voting process determined the final winner.

"We are very happy to present our award to Picnic this year. The company is an excellent example of how new business models can work. Their pragmatic approach works both in the Netherlands and Germany. We are therefore very pleased that Picnic has crossed the border and is now so successful there," said DNHK managing director Günter Gülker.

Picnic co-founder Michiel Muller stated in a reaction that he was happy with the award. "Germany is a very important market for us and the launch in the four cities on the Rhine went very well. We want to continue to grow."
