Picnic is betting on expansion in Germany. Still this year, the online supermarket will call on two new cities in our eastern neighbours.
So says Frederic Knaudt, who is at the helm of Picnic Germany, to news agency DPA. It is unclear which cities Picnic has in mind.
North Rhine-Westphalia
Picnic has been active in the German market since April. In four major cities in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia (Kaarst, Neuss, Meerbusch and Oberkassel), it delivers groceries to your doorstep. For delivery, Picnic uses a hub in Neuss and its own distribution centre in Viersen. The two new cities are in all likelihood also in North Rhine-Westphalia.
Little competition
Even after that expansion, Picnic will not sit still in Germany. Earlier, Knaudt revealed that the app-only supermarket wants to deliver in 20 German cities next year. Picnic is said to see Germany as a "great opportunity" simply because of the lack of competition in the country. Amazon operates there, but works with high entry prices and additional fees for participating in grocery delivery. Picnic is the first to offer free delivery.
