Picnic is opening a hub in Germany's Ruhr region, in the town of Bochum. Consumers from the industrialised region are said to frequently request the online delivery service.
Picnic started delivery in Germany last year, in the region around Düsseldorf. Under a different name (Sprinter Supermarket), but with the same distinctive electric trolleys, it delivers groceries to homes. The app-only supermarket now has 35,000 German customers.

'Hundreds of requests per day'
With the opening of a new hub in Bochum, Picnic is adding cities in Germany's Ruhr region to its delivery area. The city has over 360,000 inhabitants. With 25 electric delivery vans, Picnic will provide them with groceries, and other cities in the Ruhr region may follow after going live in Bochum. "Every day we receive hundreds of enquiries from people in Duisburg, Essen, Dortmund and Hamm," said Frederic Knaudt, Picnic's boss in Germany.
