Picnic is set to
expansion next year. The grocery delivery start-up hopes to expand into
ten to fifteen cities and regions. This is quite a change compared to
the six municipalities in which it currently operates.

This is according to Nu.nl, following an interview with co-founder Michiel
Muller. In Amersfoort, where Picnic was first launched, the business
now generating a turnover of 10 to 15 million euros. The online supermarket is targeting more
cities like Amersfoort, so that it can naturally recoup its start-up costs.

Picnic is expanding into many new cities, but remains cautious about the number of
households it serves. In Almere, for example, three thousand households are ‘on the
waiting list’. They have downloaded the app but cannot yet
yet. “We’ve doubled in size over the last ten weeks. That’s a huge
for your operations, because you have to ensure all those groceries arrive at the right
temperature and in the right condition,” Muller told
Nu.nl. According to the Picnic founders, people often order their groceries from Picnic for the first time
groceries online for the first time, which makes it all the more important to guarantee quality and service.

The online supermarket is currently looking for a site for a new
distribution centre. Muller had previously thought that the current distribution centre in
Nijkerk would certainly be sufficient in terms of capacity for at least three years. However, Picnic finds itself, just over
a year after its foundation, Picnic is already finding it necessary to add a storey to the distribution centre in Nijkerk
and to open an additional distribution centre at a different location.
