Supermarket chain Sainsbury's is to compete with Amazon on one-hour deliveries. Customers of the supermarket, number two in Britain, can use a mobile app to order 'Chop Chop' groceries to be delivered within the hour.
Meanwhile, customers in London's Wandsworth can already use the service. They can order up to 20 items for £4.90 in delivery charges. The British supermarket giant wants the new service to respond to the wishes of consumers, who want to decide when and where to receive groceries.
Same-day delivery
Sainsbury's is testing not only hourly delivery in London, but also same-day delivery. Customers who order before 12 noon will receive their parcel by 6pm on the same day by default. Currently, Sainsbury's still delivers from its physical branches, but the supermarket chain is opening a new fulfilment centre in London to meet online demand. With the new centre, Sainsbury's will create around 900 jobs.
Amazon Fresh
Amazon recently launched Amazon Prime where customers can order non-food products that are also delivered within an hour. In doing so, they pay £6.99. Having the order delivered the same day with two-hour time slots will cost consumers nothing. Amazon customers can choose from 15,000 different items. The US company also recently entered the grocery market with its Amazon Fresh service. Sainsbury's now seems to want to compete with Amazon.
