Shoe retailer Lloyd puts robots to work in its warehouse in Sulingen, Germany. Lloyd has acquired two picking robots from startup Magazino.
The picking robots, called TORU, are already being used in warehouses of logistics service provider Fiege Logistics and fashion platform Zalando. Since early December, they have also been in Lloyd's warehouse. The two robots are currently being tested in their new working environment and should eventually support Lloyd's warehouse workers in picking shoes.
Picking robot
Unlike many other Automated Mobile Robots (AMRs) - which can only transport whole pallets or crates - the TORU robots can pick up and move individual shoe boxes. The robot avoids people and obstacles through sensors and can therefore work side by side with warehouse workers. Thanks to a connection to the cloud and the deployment of Artificial Intelligence, the TORU continuously learns from its own experiences. That knowledge is shared among all TORU robots at work, which should eventually lead to a faster and more robust robot that recognises many situations.
Flexible, scalable automation
Stephan Wiegmann, responsible project manager at Lloyd: "The Magazino robots are an important part of flexible, scalable automation of our warehouse processes and can help us cope with the growth in e-commerce."
