Whereas in the Netherlands the delivery driver often drops off a parcel at the door, to the neighbours if necessary, in the United States it is very common to leave an ordered parcel at the door or on a porch. This also happens regularly when the customer is at home himself. That system is just particularly prone to theft.
So-called 'porch thiefs', translated to Dutch as 'porch thieves' frequently steal packages left at the door by the delivery man. The theft of ordered orders causes a lot of frustration for many consumers. Package Guard, an idea by American Mike Grabham, should counter this. He devised a smart sensor to protect parcels from theft.
How?
The delivery driver leaves the parcel on the sensor plate which is pressure-sensitive. The moment the parcel is taken from the sensor, the pressure disappears and an alarm goes off. A loud sound should change the thieves' minds. If the recipient wants to remove the parcel from the special plate himself, he or she can unlock it by sending a message to the Package Guard. In addition, the recipient receives an e-mail or a message on his mobile phone so that he knows the parcel has been delivered.
Money needed
Currently, the Package Guard is not yet available. The manufacturer's developer hopes to raise enough money to bring the prototype to market through a Kickstarter campaign. The cost of the sensor is estimated at US$80.
