Wehkamp is again adding extra square metres to its mega distribution centre in Zwolle. The logistics centre, which currently has 110,000 square metres, will be expanded by another 30,000 square metres this year. The move follows the acquisition of kleertjes.com and structural growth in online demand.
Wehkamp claims that the change in strategy implemented in recent years has done it no harm. The e-tailer has focused on fashion, living, children's clothing and beauty for families. That combined with fast delivery options has led to "strong and stable profitable growth".
Besides organic growth, Wehkamp needs additional logistics capacity due to the acquisition of kleertjes.com in mid-2021. "Furthermore, we expect the accelerated shift to online shopping to be permanent and the number of customers ordering from Wehkamp to continue to rise," said Graham Harris, CEO of Wehkamp. "We expect this trend to continue in the coming years and therefore it is a good time to further invest in our logistics capabilities, our future and our leading position in the Dutch online retail market."
Extra square metres for large goods
The expansion of Wehkamp's logistics centre is expected to be commissioned in early 2023. The online retailer says it will build the new section in the same sustainable way, in collaboration with real estate specialist WDP. For instance, the roof of the new section will be fitted with 2,000 additional solar panels. The new section will be dedicated to the distribution of large goods such as furniture. The latter is an important part of Wehkamp's focus on the home category, which is a pillar of its growth strategy alongside fashion, children's clothing and beauty products.
