Current temperatures are causing extreme heat in warehouses with flat roofs. To prevent health complaints among warehouse staff, companies should work with a tropical schedule.
That's what industry organisation evofenedex advises. In the Netherlands, there is no temperature limit at which companies must take measures. Nevertheless, employers are obliged to protect staff from health complaints caused by excessively high temperatures. Companies that do not take measures can be reprimanded by the Labour Inspectorate. It can demand that measures be taken and even stop work.
Even when warehouses have blinds or air conditioning, temperatures can rise sharply during the day. Evofenedex therefore advises companies to work with a tropical schedule. "For example, start at 6:00 a.m. and continue working until around 2:00 p.m."
The industry association says companies can also briefly water the flat roof at regular intervals. Another tip: carry out as much work as possible on the ground floor. That is where the temperature is usually lowest.
Workers driving around in vans or trucks are advised to carry extra water. "Although most vehicles are air-conditioned, it is wise to carry extra drinks in case a breakdown occurs on the road."
