The driver shortage poses a major threat to fleet managers in Europe and the United States. Research shows fleet managers see this as their biggest concern over the next five years.

Descartes asked companies in logistics and transport about their biggest fleet management challenges. 72 per cent of the 130 respondents are particularly concerned about a driver shortage.

In second place is the increasing number of customer demands. Continuous technological changes and additional regulations make it increasingly difficult for companies to meet customer demands in an efficient manner.

Through technological solutions, they are still trying to broaden their delivery options and offer additional services. Over the next two years, companies expect to invest in trip planning and track & trace.

"While reducing costs is a key challenge facing fleet managers, the driver shortage is lurking as the biggest threat over the next five years," says Albert van Roekel, Senior Consultant Route Management at Descartes. "In addition, higher customer service expectations are driving growing competitive concerns and new operational pressures facing fleet management."
