Albert Heijn delivers groceries ordered online in the centre of Amsterdam starting todayThe new delivery method should contribute to a cleaner and more traffic-friendly city in the capital. It is initially a trial.

With the trial, the supermarket giant is following in the footsteps of restaurants that already deliver by bike. As more and more consumers want their shopping delivered to their homes, AH expects to contribute to a more sustainable city.

Capacity
From the edge of the city, the delivery driver will collect the groceries from the warehouse and then make his rounds in the city itself. The capacity of the delivery bike leaves nothing to be desired, as it can carry 30 full shopping crates. In the beginning, Albert Heijn will only use one bike, but there should be ten by the end of the year.

Last mile
Albert Heijn has been working on improving the last mile for some time. The supermarket chain wants to save kilometres by using a large truck to deliver orders to a point outside the city. From there, small delivery trucks drive into town. Besides the bicycle, Albert Heijn is testing an electric delivery car in Amsterdam.
