Supermarket chain Albert Heijn started the construction of a new mechanised distribution centre in Zaandam on 28 April. In the distribution centre, Albert Heijn aims to mechanise the entire distribution process of perishable products.

Vanderlande is supplying the mechanisation solution for the distribution centre, which will allow more products to be processed in the same space, according to the supermarket chain. The products are already stacked according to the layout of the shop, making it easier for shop employees to fill the shelves. The DC still has room for 'regular' employees. According to Albert Heijn, permanent employees are guaranteed jobs. However, the heavy manual work will be taken over by machines.

The new distribution centre will be located on the site of the existing distribution centre in Zaandam. The building will cover 23,000 square metres and will be completed by mid-2018. 6380 solar panels will be installed on the building. Partly because of this, the distribution centre will receive the BREEAM-NL Excellent sustainability certificate, a hallmark that assesses buildings for sustainability.
