Discounter Aldi has again lost market share and is forced to reorganise, with the distribution centre in Best closing its doors at the end of this year. This will put 150 employees on the street.

Supermarkets recorded record sales last corona year. But Aldi did not profit enough from this. The discounter lost market share for the second year in a row (from 5.9 to 5.5 per cent). The closure of the distribution centre in Best, which Aldi says is not future-proof, is therefore inevitable. The adjacent office in Best will also be closed. Aldi shops will be supplied from next year from the DCs in Culemborg, Roermond and Roosendaal.

The warehouse staff, drivers and office workers have to look for other jobs. Around 150 employees are involved. The company is still consulting with the unions for a social plan.

Not the first DC to close

Last year, Aldi also announced the closure of its distribution centre and office in Zaandam. As a result, 125 employees will lose their jobs. On this too, Aldi reported that the location was not "future-proof". Meanwhile, a distribution centre of 42,000 square metres is being built in Deventer. This location will replace the distribution centres in Groenlo and Ommen. The new building should be operational by the end of 2021. Around that time, the other two sites will close their doors.

Various bv's

Aldi has a unique organisational structure. The supermarket has operated from several regional bv's since 1973. Each bv has its own head office, with a distribution centre attached to it. In addition to Zoetermeer, Best, Groenlo and Ommen, there are bv's in Culemborg, Drachten, Roosendaal and Roermond.
