Aldi is swapping its distribution centre in Drachten for a new location. In spring 2022, the mass retailer will move into a new 37,000-square-metre building near Hoogkerk in Groningen.

Construction of the distribution centre on the Westpoort industrial estate will start at the end of this year. The premises will offer employment to around 190 people. The current employees of Aldi Drachten can move along to the new workplace. "We understand that these changes will affect our employees. Everyone can come along, retaining our people is paramount," says regional director Piet Lautenbag.

The new building is to be more modern, sustainable and larger than the current DC. The location at Hoogkerk, to the west of Groningen, is also more centrally located in the region. From Groningen, Aldi will supply around 65 stores.

Deventer distribution centre

Aldi is also looking to optimise logistics in the east of the country. Earlier this year, the supermarket chain announced a relocation to Deventer. A 42,000-square-metre building will replace the current warehouses in Groenlo and Ommen. From Deventer, Aldi will supply around 120 stores, about a quarter of Aldi shops in the Netherlands.

The distribution centre in Deventer should be operational by the end of 2021. Around that time, the sites in Ommen and Groenlo will close their doors.
