Amazon handles its own sea transport from China to the United States. The etail giant registered as a sea freight carrier a year ago and is now carrying out the shipments.

Since October, Amazon already brought 150 containers from China to its own distribution centres in the US. It does so through Chinese subsidiary Beijing Century Joyo Courier Service.

Amazon has been setting up a logistics network for some time, not only with sea transport but also via air. In fact, the US online shop also already leases 40 aircraft. By keeping the logistics process in its own hands, the etailer wants to be less dependent on external carriers. In previous years, orders were not delivered on time due to problems at these parties. Last year, parcels threatened tobe late in the run-up to Black Friday due to a strike at airline ABX Air. The courts eventually put a stop to this.

Amazon also recently applied for a patent for a flying distribution centre. This DC, in the form of a zappelin, could come in handy for large events. Drones can deliver orders from the zappelin to consumers.
