Amazon wants to make more consumers members of its premium service Prime. The etail giant is doing so by sharply increasing shipping costs for German consumers without a Prime membership.
For standard deliveries, consumers now pay EUR 3.99 to have a parcel delivered, an increase of a whopping 33 per cent. For same-day delivery, Amazon increased the cost by 40 per cent to 13.99 euros.
Amazon Prime is a premium service that gives members online access to thousands of movies, TV series and books. In addition, Prime subscribers do not have to pay shipping costs for delivery within two days.
Raising shipping costs has gained many Prime subscribers in the United States. Some 20 per cent of US consumers are currently Prime members. There, an annual subscription costs $99. The etailer has also introduced a monthly variant, appealing to consumers who order especially a lot around Black Friday and Christmas. US consumers pay $10.99 for this.
