Amazon is actively developing its logistics capabilities. The
US e-commerce giant is building an app that links transport companies’ loads
with freight vehicles.
Business Insider reports on this, citing
sources close to the company. The app allows haulage companies to book a journey
with drivers heading in the same direction. They receive immediate, real-time
information on prices and routes.
US logistics companies can make
apps. This is because intermediaries typically charge around 15
per cent commission for matching loads with transport. Amazon is said to be
that rate. Initially, this is mainly to attract customers.
The e-commerce giant is also currently busy
setting up its own delivery network. Amazon currently still makes extensive use
companies such as UPS and FedEx, but appears to want to reduce its reliance
on external carriers. For example, it wants to keep air freight under its own control by
leasing aircraft. Earlier this year, it also announced plans to
invest in sea freight.
