Google is busy developing drones that can take on package delivery. In doing so, the internet giant hopes to trump Amazon, which has been trying to deploy drones package delivery for some time.
Amazon leads the way
Google is still some way behind Amazon, as the latter has been working on drone development for some time. It could take Google years before its first drones are optimised for delivery. At present, the drones are reportedly only capable of flying one kilometre and carrying very small parcels.
Approval
Amazon may well be at a more advanced stage, but both giants will have to wait for authorisation before they can actually start using the drones. Last month, the e-tailer asked the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for permission to test its drones over a larger area. The FAA currently permits hobby drones, but commercial use of the aircraft is still prohibited.
